7 Super Easy Ways To Get The Perfect Messy Bun

Topknot, messy bun, "I ain't got time for this today" bun - whatever you want to call it, one thing is for sure: we just can't get enough of these hot-mess buns. Besides the fact that Megan Markyle made some major waves with her "Unroyal" messy bun spattered on the front cover of every major magazine, we love it because it's easy, fast, and almost impossible to mess up. So today we figured we'd give you some unroyal inspiration of your own. We're not saying you're going to have your picture spattered across the front cover of People, but you're sure as hell going to feel like it should be.

Supplies

For almost all the messy buns in this tutorial, you're going to need three things:

  1. Hair ties
  2. Bobby Pins (or 500 bobby pins for a few bucks.)
  3. Optional: Hairspray (our fav is Hairplay because it's flexible, so if you need to redo your 'do halfway through the day it's not crunchy.)

Instructions
  1. Lightly spray and tease the front section around your face
  2. Comb through any knots with your fingers
  3. Pull your hair back into a level ponytail
  4. Grab and twist your ponytail (the tighter the twist, the neater the bun)
  5. Wrap the twisted pony around the base of the ponytail
  6. Bobby pin as necessary

The pin-up messy bun

Let's not lie to ourselves, we all love a good throwback from a bygone era, and this pin-up-esque hairstyle is a favorite that's making a huge comeback. While we might think of pin-ups as women from the early 1900's when women's rights as we know them now were just beginning to come to fruition during WWII, they've actually been around since the early 1800's.

Instructions
  1. Pull your hair into a ponytail where you want your bun to sit and hold it with your left hand
  2. With your right hand hold the hair tie and scrunch your hair up into a bun starting at the bottom of your hair
  3. Grab the hair your left hand was holding and pull the hair tie around using your left hand
  4. Leave most of the ends that you can out and curl
  5. Wrap with headband
